The Urban Porch

2022 Brewer Ingram Fuller Sustainable Design Award

4th Year Design Studio

Professor James Rose

Site Location: 1255 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309

Designing for: equitable communities, economy, energy, well-being, resources, change, water, discovery

The concept of this awarded project is to eliminate the barriers between people, nature, and buildings through the re-imagination of the community porch and courtyard. The project is located in a high-density and developing area in Mid-town of Atlanta City which supports the ability of the project to connect humans and nature at the site and surrounding area. The project program is a mixed-use building of residential, community use, and marketplace. Therefore, the environment of the building is designed for occupants to engage and work together. The main connection for this interaction is through the elevated courtyard that gives direct access to residents and visitors. The use of the porch supplies great value to social, economic, and environmental goals.

What is an urban porch for Atlanta?

1. A transitional space between private and public that promotes the coming together of community decisions.

2. An entry that promotes communal gathering of all people into programmed spaces.

3. A unification of nature and interior within a city context

4. A mitigation of climate to create a comforting atmosphere year round.
